Phase one of the expansion will allegedly see 114 cell sites installed in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana over the next four months.
This will largely target urbanised areas of these regions in a bid to ease high traffic congestion, close the gap between communities and boost overall network quality and capacity.
“We have just started the new roll-outs and the feedback is excellent,” Ron Reddick, chief technology and information officer at Tigo, told reporters.
“For instance we had some congestion within the Airport Residential Area in Accra, which affected customer experience, and since splitting up the traffic and migrating some customers to the new cell sites, we have received very good reviews on our internet speed and overall quality for voice calls.”
A further 161 cell sites will be added to Tigo’s network over the next couple of years, reports claim.
In December last year, Tigo appointed Tara Squire as head of its mobile unit in Ghana.
