Huawei Marine kicks off Nigeria-Cameroon cable roll-out

Huawei Marine Networks has today announced that it has commenced marine installation of the Nigeria-Cameroon Submarine Cable System (NCSCS).

The NCSCS, spanning 1,100km and linking Kribi, Cameroon to Lagos, Nigeria, will be Cameroon’s first submarine system backed by the Cameroon government.

“The government of Cameroon has embarked on putting in place the necessary facilities to boost the demand and supply of services in quality, in quantity and at affordable prices, as well as to increase telecommunications universal access,” said Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, the minister of posts and telecommunications in Cameroon.

The route will be designed to deliver 12.8Tbps of capacity to broadband users in both Nigeria and Cameroon by the end of 2015, and forms part of Cameroon’s broader strategic plan to build a national broadband network.

“The NCSCS system enables us to provide users with faster bandwidth connectivity at a significantly lower cost,” said David Nkoto Emane, general manager, Cameroon Telecommunications Corporation (CAMTEL).

“By providing direct connection to Nigeria, the cable system will also serve to enhance Cameroon’s position as the major bandwidth hub in the region and internationally to Europe and beyond.”

Huawei is deploying its wavelength division multiplex (WDM) and optical transport network (OTN) technologies on the route, which will also incorporate the world’s first titanium-cased six fibre pair repeater.
