Bharti Airtel expands 4G services to 296 towns

India’s Bharti Airtel will be expanding its 4G services to 296 urban towns in the next few weeks.

The company also plans to extend its 4G network to 100 more Indian cities by the end of the year, according to the Economic Times. The operator presently offers 4G services in 45 cities and towns in India.

“With the help of the feedback received from the beta launches, we have now built India’s first commercial 4G network that will make high speed mobile broadband a reality,” said Gopal Vittal, Airtel's managing director and chief executive officer.

“The national roll-out is another small step in our journey to be the most innovative and customer focused brand.”

The move will enable Airtel to gain an advantage over Reliance Jio Infocomm, which has pushed its pan-India 4G launch from June to the end of the year

Airtel presently has 230 million subscribers in the country, with a presence in 14 service areas. India is divided into 22 telecoms service areas.
