TeliaSonera and Telenor offer concessions to merger

The European Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for its decision on the proposed merger of Denmark’s TeliaSonera and Telenor, following the submission of their proposed concessions.

The operator offered their concessions to the EC last week, which pushed the deadline of the decision from September 16 to October 7.

TeliaSonera and Telenor revealed plans to merge their operations in Denmark into a joint venture last year. The move would reduce the country’s operator from four to three.

In April 2015, the EC launched an investigation in the deal, expressing concerns that the deal could impede competition in the country’s mobile industry and lead to higher prices for customers.

In addition the regulatory body noted the two remaining players – TDC and Hi3G – could struggle to compete with the merged group which will own a market share of approximately 40%.
