Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is planning to roll out free internet across India, and the TRAI’s document has become key to the wider debate surrounding net neutrality in India.
Facebook has partnered with Indian telco Reliance Communications for the service – Free Basics – and the TRAI has requested that it be put on hold until authorities have considered all details, terms and conditions of the service.
The TRAI document has raised concerns over Free Basics’ zero-rating model, and internet activists have claimed that the service violates the principle of net neutrality.
The date for submissions has been pushed back from December 30 to January 7, with the last date for counter-comments set for January 14.
