HKT and Huawei complete VoLTE network migration

PCCW’s mobile subsidiary, Hong Kong Telecom (HKT), has completed what it claims to be the world’s first VoLTE network migration in partnership with Chinese vendor Huawei.

The migration is part of the HKT-CSL network convergence project following HKT’s acquisition of CSL, Telstra’s Hong Kong mobile phone unit, in 2014.

In two days, and with no support from original device vendors, Huawei migrated 2G/3G/4G computer network (CN), the data of HKT’s several million subscribers, as well as VoLTE and CSFB (circuit switch fallback) services to its new CN.

The signalling migration process allegedly lasted no longer than two minutes and went largely unnoticed by subscribers.

“HKT-CSL network convergence has been Huawei CN's most complex migration because it required collaboration of PS, CS, and notably IMS domains. No one else has ever attempted VoLTE migration," said Wang Yongde, VP of Huawei's CN Product Line.

“Huawei has worked independently to achieve HKT's lossless migration of 2G/3G/4G CN, and fully demonstrated our strengths, especially in the VoLTE field.”

In April last year, HKT and Huawei came together in another world first with the demonstration of an IP-RAN-based LTE-A 450Mbps solution.
