Equinix completes TelecityGroup acquisition, appoints board member

Equinix has completed its acquisition of TelecityGroup and appointed former TelecityGroup executive John Hughes to its board of directors.

First announced in May last year, the £2.6 billion ($3.8 billion) deal officially closed on January 2015 and will double Equinix’s existing capacity in Europe with the addition of 40+ data centres from TelecityGroup.

“Today is a very important day for Equinix as we close the acquisition of Telecity, which is a significant milestone in our 17-year history,” said Steve Smith, president and CEO at Equinix.

“By increasing the scale of the Equinix interconnection platform in key markets throughout Europe, we are able to better serve global enterprises while creating meaningful shareholder value.”

Hughes has served as executive chairman at TelecityGroup since 2014, and non-executive chairman since 2007, and holds more than 30 years’ experience in leading global technology firms.

“The combination of Equinix and Telecity gives businesses more choice for interconnection, which is increasingly important in this highly digital age, when customers rely on connectivity to drive competitive advantage,” Hughes said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all the committed, talented employees at Telecity who together built Europe’s premium data centre business and remain committed to the smooth integration of our two companies. It is with great pleasure that I will continue to work with the combined business as a member of Equinix’s board of directors.”

Equinix’s global interconnection platform now reached 40 metros including seven new metros across Europe.
