The AAE-1 cable consortium has signed a supply contract with Xtera to equip three terrestrial segments of its network.
Xtera will equip the system’s terrestrial segments in Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore with its optical amplification and flex-rate channel card technologies, enabling 200G channels over long distances. The Malaysia- Singapore terrestrial segment will directly terminate in two separate data centres in Singapore.

Xtera claims to provide a “future-proof solution” based on its advanced Nu-Wave Optima optical networking platform combining 200G coherent technology, ‘Wise Raman’ optical amplification service and fast protection switching. Each terrestrial segment is said to comprise of two physically diverse routes supporting a minimum of 18Tbit/s cross-sectional capacity per fibre pair.
The submarine cable system is scheduled for completion in 2016 and is said to be one of the largest consortium cable projects under way, extending approximately 25,000km and connecting Asia, the Middle East, East Africa and Europe.
