The partnership will see Ericsson become the sole supplier of cloud products and services in the operator’s network, which now has 15.7 million Colombian subscribers.
Network virtualisation represents vast efficiency and agility opportunities for the operator, which is aiming to have “a common and complete solution for telco, IT and enterprise services”, said Enrique Blanco, global CTO of Telefónica group.
“Telefónica is aiming for a robust, carrier-grade, fast time-to-market launch and thus speeding new services to our customers,” added Hernan Felipe Cucalon, CTO of Telefónica Colombia.
Rival Colombian operator Avantel had previously announced its intentions to work with Nokia to deploy Colombia’s first cloud-based VoLTE, but it seems that they have now missed out in the race.
Telefónica has been present in Colombia since 2004.
