The company says that it will be able to deliver mobile data services at four times the speeds of existing 3G technology. Digicel is investing $50 million to deploy LTE across Jamaica.
“We’re focused on always delivering the most advanced mobile network technology that fits our customers’ lifestyle and budget. The activation of our LTE network is a major step in this direction,” said CEO of Digicel Jamaica, David Butler.
Services will be available for postpaid and prepaid customers. Digicel has over 2 million customers in Jamaica, of whom 1.3 million are smartphone users, Digicel said that it continues to see demand for fast mobile broadband internet service “skyrocket in Jamaica”. The LTE network is operating on the 700MHz band.
Butler said: “It’s a significant milestone for Jamaica. We’ve invested in innovation that can empower consumers and businesses to reach a new potential as they explore, discover and unleash fresh possibilities online with LTE.”
