Vodafone UK goes live with Cisco’s SON technology

Vodafone UK has announced that it has become the first mobile company in the UK to go live with Cisco’s self-optimising network (SON) technology to boost voice quality and reduce network congestion.

Vodafone UK says to keep abreast of “more than 44 billion voice minutes were carried in the last financial year and around 72 million calls were made per day” it has spent approximately £2bn on its network and services across the UK and expects to invest another £2 billion over the next three years.

It boosted network data capacity in urban areas last month with the launch of its network in a briefcase initiative and this week has deployed SON with Cisco.

“We continue to innovate to help ensure that our customers never miss calls and have the best possible network experiences. Using Cisco SON is another important step toward that goal and we have already seen improvements not only in call set up failure, but also in dropped call reduction,” said Jorge Fernandes, CTO of Vodafone UK.

The technology is being used across London and the Southern UK region to give their customers an improved call connection time and more reliable voice experiences.

SON can monitor usage levels in real time and direct calls to alternative masts or antennas, distributing traffic more effectively to reduce congestion.

Mike Iandolo, vice president and general manager of mobility at Cisco, added: “Vodafone is respected around the world for the quality of its network and its engineering organisation. We are confident in entrusting Cisco SON with boosting network performance and transforming the customer experience even further.”
