Prysmian increases subsea cable fleet to three

Prysmian is has completed work on its latest cable ship and it is about to start work on a project in the Philippines.

The new ship, called Ulisse, was adapted from a flat-topped barge at a Singapore shipyard at a cost of €20 million. Ulisse joins Prysmian’s fleet of two other ships, Giulio Verne and Cable Enterprise.

Massimo Battaini, Prysmian senior vice president, said: “Thanks to this new vessel we can offer an ever wider and more versatile range of installation services, thus strengthening our position in a highly strategic sector for the group.”

Meanwhile Prysmian has announced that it will open two new plants for the production of telecommunications and data cables in Europe. The plants are being built as extensions on existing factories located in Slatina, Romania, and Presov, Slovakia and will be opened shortly.

Both plants will be the biggest in Europe for their category once they reach full capacity at the beginning of 2017.

Francesco Fanciulli, Prysmian CEO for Central Eastern Europe, said: “It is extremely significant that two centres of excellence in Europe for the production of telecoms cables are located in Eastern Europe. This confirms Prysmian’s commitment to invest in the most competitive areas in Europe, helping its customers deliver quality and innovation through faster, flexible and cost-effective deployments.”
