KPN creates new company in colocation drive

Dutch operator KPN has announced that six of its data centres, which offer colocation services, are to be moved into a new separate company, operating independently within the KPN Group.

The new carrier and cloud-neutral structure will enable KPN to better capitalise on opportunities within the colocation market. KPN said in a statement that it has made the move in response to its customers wanting carrier or cloud neutrality when sourcing which provider to work with.

Companies are increasingly turning to cloud for their IT systems and are using colocation data centres to facilitate this transition. The data centres in Aalsmeer, Almere, Eindhoven, Groningen, Oude Meer (Schiphol) and Rotterdam have been moved into the separate company.

“This allows KPN to continue to serve the entire market and maximises growth opportunities. KPN is providing greater focus on and continuing to invest in the quality of the new 'colocation' business providing greater focus,” a company statement said.

KPN added that the name of the new company will be announced at a later date.
