The demo, which was carried out in Deutsche Telekom’s 5G lab in Bonn, Germany, added dynamic network slicing of the 5G radio access network (RAN) and data centre, as well as the interconnecting transmission network to existing 5G tests.
The purpose of the demonstration was to highlight how a 5G network can be automatically optimised on a shared RAN, Core and transport network, allowing the creation of slices in sub-minute time, while efficiently allocating resources.
"Network Slicing is envisaged for 5G to provide differentiated connectivity quickly and efficiently for the diverse future applications that our customers will demand. With automated network slicing, the development of highly flexible end-to-end network slicing becomes more complete,” said Deutsche Telekom CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn.
It is the latest development in a long-standing partnership between Chinese vendor Huawei and the German carrier. In September, tests carried out by the two firms realised LTE speeds of over 1.2Gbps, while the partnership also resulted in the first demonstration of millimetre wave technology for 5G.
Huawei has recently made a number of announcements around 5G, including tests with Vodafone and KPN in the Netherlands.
