MegaFon and Huawei hit 35Gbps speeds in mobile trials

Russian operator MegaFon has claimed to have hit an all time mobile speed record, seeing speeds of 35Gbps as part of a trial with Huawei.

MegaFon held the trial in the city of St Petersburg, using 2GHz of bandwidth in the 70GHz E-band.

The demonstration, held to coincide with St. Petersburg’s International Economic Forum, which ran between 1-3 June 2017, is part of the Russian firm’s plans for 5G deployment, according to chief technology officer Alexander Bashmakov.

He added: "Today MegaFon subscribers have access to speeds of up to 300Mbps and up to 450Mbps in Moscow. Right now as part of our development program we are creating the technological base for 5G so we can be the first in Russia to launch a commercial network using this technology and again astonish our subscribers with the fastest speeds."

MegaFon was the first Russian operator to launch a commercial 3G UMTS network. In 2012, the company launched its LTE network and, in 2014, was the first to launch an LTE Advanced network.

MegaFon has previously unveiled plans to deploy 5G technologies to support a number of use cases, including autonomous vehicles and virtual reality, at next year’s football World Cup.
