The demonstration included real-time UHD video transmission using ultra-high throughput; the remote control of a robotic arm using low latency transmission; and remote rendering through a GPU server using edge computing.
The video transmission demonstrated throughput of over 800Mbps, while the robotic arm demo showed off latency of less than 2ms on a one-way transmission.
For the video demo, SoftBank installed a camera inside the room that captured oudoor scenery. The data from this camera was then compressed, transmitted over a 5G network to a UHD monitor where it was decoded, demonstrating high-speeds of high quality video content. SoftBank and Huawei also demonstrated immersive video, which can be used for applications including virtual reality and augmented reality.
In the second test, a remote controlled robotic arm placed air hockey against a human, with a camera installed on top of the air hockey table which detected the pucks position. This would be used in things like factory automation, Huawei claimed.
The demonstrations come as telecoms operators and vendors compete to become the fastest to deploy 5G technologies, with initial deployments expected as early next year. Huawei has partnered with operators across the world.
