The company said Verizon Digital Media Services has launched network points of presence (PoPs) in Mexico and in South Africa, with plans to open an additional super PoP in France before the end of March 2018.
The moves will expand the Edgecast content delivery network (CDN) by over 200%, said Verizon.
Kyle Okamoto, chief network officer for Verizon Digital Media Services, said: “We have exceeded expectations in scaling our network to meet today’s and tomorrow’s digital media delivery demands. We are wholly committed to continuing to invest and build out our CDN to ensure the best quality experience across gaming, application acceleration, e-commerce, media and entertainment and more.”
Verizon Digital Media Services already had two PoPs in Mexico, in Santiago de Querétaro and Puebla, in addition to others in Latin America, but expanded to Mexico City last month. The company said: “These three cities were specifically selected with incumbent networks in the country to ensure optimal quality with a clear path to further scaling, as quality boosts lead to increased traffic growth.”
Now the CDN is directly connected to 95% of internet service provider consumers in Mexico, the company added.
Verizon Digital Media Services is adding Marseille to its existing 18 PoPs in Europe, recognising its role as a major internet hub for southern France and – via subsea cables – North Africa and the Middle East.
The company’s first PoP in Johannesburg – its first in Africa – started work in November 2017.
Verizon Digital Media Services is part of Oath, the company’s new name for its content operations following its acquisition of AOL and Yahoo.
