SACS cable from Angola due to reach Brazil in early February

The first cable connecting southern Africa to South America should reach the coast of Brazil in early February, according to Angola Cables.

The 6,500km South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) will have four fibre pairs and a capacity of 40Tbps when it goes into service in the third quarter of 2018.

“From a global traffic perspective, the introduction of SACS between Angola and Brazil opens a new routing. South America will be able to reach Europe and Asia avoiding the US and Africa will be able to reach the US without linking through Europe,” said CEO António Nunes. “The SACS project presents a unique platform for us to build a south-south network configuration on a global scale.”

SACS is designed to have a 63ms latency, compared with 350ms on the existing long way round from Angola to Brazil.

“SACS is a ‘game changer’,” said Nunes. “It provides a catalyst and springboard for the expansion of internet exchange points and related infrastructure investments. Through SACS, southern hemisphere countries will be more connected and in a better position to drive the development of the region’s digital economy.”

Angola Cables is building a data centre at Fortaleza, the Brazilian landing point. “Construction works of the landing station/data centre is also progressing well,” said the company.
