CoreSite to build new Chicago data centre, doubling city capacity

CoreSite is to build a second data centre in Chicago, close to its existing data centre in the city, at a cost of up to $210 million.

The company’s CH2 centre will be on four floors, eventually supporting 18MW of power capacity, connected by diverse dark fibre to the existing CH1 centre.

“We are pleased to have acquired land in downtown Chicago, providing us with much-needed capacity to serve new and expansion requirements of current and prospective customers in the fifth largest multi-tenant data centre market in North America,” said CoreSite CEO Paul Szurek.

“We expect CH2 to enhance our ability to compete effectively in the Chicago market for customer requirements seeking a high performance, cloud-enabled and scalable, higher density colocation solution.”

The new centre will be built about a mile from the existing CH1, said the company. CoreSite expects to start construction at the end of 2018 or early next year, after it receives the required permits. It will be built in three phases of 6MW each, CoreSit added.

It will be connected to AWS Direct Connect, Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute and Google Cloud Platform as well as other platforms.

CoreSite’s CH1 is in central Chicago, in the Telegraph Building in LaSalle Street, close to the Board of Trade. The Carlyle group bought the building in 2007 for $34 million. It provides access to low-latency connections for the many financial, healthcare and media companies deployed within the colocation site.

At the time of sale, the Telegraph Building was said to be 165,000 square feet. CoreSite says CH2 will be slightly bigger, at 175,000 square feet (16,250 square metres).
