NTT and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have developed a high-speed IC for wireless front-end that operates on a terahertz frequency band.Through the partnership the two also achieved a 100Gbps wireless data rate on the 300GHz band.
During development the joint team used a mixer circuit that leveraged proprietary high isolation design technology with an Indium phosphide high electron mobility transistor (InP-HEMT).
NTT said that in doing so it expanded the transmission bandwidth which is typically a problem in the 300GHz band wireless front end. The process also improved the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). In addition, using a 300GHZ wireless front-end module, achieved wireless transmission of 100Gbps.
Looking ahead the parties say that it can extend the technology to multiple carriers by making use of the wide frequency of the 300GHz band, as well as the spatial multiplexing technology such as MIMO and OAM. In doing so the two expect to develop high-speed IC technology that enables wireless transmission of 400Gbps. This is about 400 times the capacity of the current LTE and Wifi capabilities, and 40 times more than what 5G is expected to deliver.
The technology is expected to act as a precursor to the utilization of the unused terahertz wave frequency band in both communications and non-communications fields.
