He will take over on 1 August from Mike Parton, who has been acting chairman since last month. Parton will return to his role of deputy chair.
TDC is still looking for a new CEO to replace Pernille Erenbjerg, who said in May that she would leave the company at the end of 2018.
Norberg, an electrical engineer, was in the computer industry at Data General and DEC before joining Ericsson. He was president and CEO of Sony Ericsson, the ultimately unsuccessful joint venture to make mobile phones, and then of Sony Mobile after Ericsson sold its stake.
Allan Polack, the CEO of Danish pension agency PFA, which led a consortium to buy TDC in April, said: “Bert is very experienced, and his knowledge of the telecommunications industry, as well as the Danish business sector, make him an excellent choice to head the TDC board.”
Polack added: “The 8,000 employees and TDC management are hard at work implementing our strategic vision for TDC and we look forward to Bert assisting with leading that process.”
Nordberg said: “I am convinced that the strategy outlined by the new shareholders is the right one for the company and for Denmark. I am excited to get started and look forward to working in partnership with Mike Parton and the rest of the board to apply my experience to the implementation of this new direction for TDC.”
