Telefónica Spain (España) has purchased 50MHz spectrum for €107.6 million enabling it to offer 5G services to its customers.
The company obtained ten blocks of frequencies (50MHz in total) in the auction held by the Ministry of Economy and Business, meaning that the telco retains its priority position for frequencies for 5G.
Telefónica retain the newly purchased spectrum until the year 2038, it also adds to the 40MHz which Telefónica already has in this band and the €107.4 million is to be paid in twenty equal instalments.
Specifically, Telefónica has acquired 10x5 MHz in the 3600-3800 MHz sub-band, which it will use to support the deployment of a nationwide network for the 5G technology from 2020.
The telco says it applied rationality criteria during the auction and won its desired spectrum while paying the lowest price per MHz of all the bidders at the auction.
In addition, it says that it will be able to face the predicted increase in demand for data in mobility, as a result of the generalisation of new connected devices, the Internet of Things, and the new applications in the connected car, augmented reality, or 4.0 industry environments, all of which demand high bandwidth and low latency connectivity solutions.
