Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Ensoft, a privately held networking software company based in the UK.

Confirmed via blog post on the company’s website, Rob Salvagno (pictured), head of corporate development and investments at Cisco said that the decision underscores the company’s commitment to simplify service provider networks through automation and programmability.

The undisclosed deal will accelerate Cisco’s innovation in the areas of unified transport and service layers with Segment Routing (SR) and Ethernet Virtual Private Networks (EVPN). Both of which is said to be helping the evolution of mass-scale IP infrastructure embedded with programmability and automation.

In addition, Cisco has developed the Cisco IOS XR operating system for service provider routing systems that offers IP networking innovation across a variety of devices and form factors from a single code base.

Once completed Ensoft will bring with it a strong pipeline of talent to Cisco augmenting its existing innovation efforts in networking software. The deal is expected to close by Q2 of 2019.

The news comes a few months after Cisco pledged to spend $100 million to help accelerate digital innovation in the UK. The decision aligned with the government’s Industrial Strategy and will foster partnerships across industry, government and academia in the region.

"The decision by Cisco to make such a significant commitment to digital innovation across the UK is welcome news and is a vote of confidence in our Modern Industrial Strategy,” said Prime Minister Theresa May.
