Telefónica Germany has chosen IPX provider iBasis to expand its IPX cooperation to cope with increasing mobile data traffic.

The iBasis IPX will provide Telefónica Germany with increased capacity to 100Gbps and enable it to deliver reliable, high-speed data roaming services to its subscribers. This scalability boost will help it to meet the explosive 4G mobile data roaming demand.

"Customer demand for mobile data services is increasing significantly from year to year," said Alfons Lösing, member of the Management Board and chief partner & business officer of Telefónica Deutschland (pictured).

“As a consistently customer-oriented company with the goal of becoming the mobile customer and digital champion in Germany, we adapt our technical infrastructure to these user needs with foresight, and this also applies to data roaming.”

One year after the end of roaming charges, subscribers are now more aware and confident in the new ‘Roam Like Home’ rules in the EU and significant traffic volume increases are observed worldwide: the roaming traffic on the iBasis IPX network has doubled during summer 2018 compared to summer 2017.

Feddo Hazewindus, iBasis CEO, added: “We are very pleased to strengthen our long-standing excellent relationship with one of the German market leaders in mobile services. It is important to work with market leaders such as Telefónica Deutschland as we continue to innovate in enhancing our multi service IPX network and prepare the network for upcoming demand from NB-IoT and the advent of 5G.”

Alexandre Pébereau of Tofane Global, which completed its acquisition of Altice’s wholesale voice business – and the deal has been extended to include mobile voice, told Capacity in September that its acquisition of iBasis from KPN is likely to be completed by the end of 2018.
