Total sales of equipment for the data centre interconnect (DCI) market is set to grow by 85% over the next five years, according to a report from the Dell'Oro Group.

The report entitled Advanced Research: Data Center Interconnect reviews and forecasts the DCI infrastructure market from three network perspectives: optical transport, data centre core, and wide area networks (WAN). DCI will also drive strong demand for optical transport, Ethernet data centre switch, and routing technologies.

“Data traffic within the cloud is increasing at unabated rates, and DCI networks are integral to carrying the traffic,” said Shin Umeda (pictured), vice president at Dell’Oro Group. “We see strong demand for a wide range of networking gear for DCI, from the fibre optic layer up to the packet forwarding layer, and our forecast takes into account how these network layers are interrelated.”

Other findings from the report include the prediction that optical transport networks will account for the majority of the DCI market value over the next five years and that the DCI market share leaders for 2017 were Ciena for optical transport networks, while Juniper Networks took the lead for WAN and data centre core networks.

In related news Juniper expanded its campus portfolio, including its EVPN-VXLAN fabric to the campus creating a common architecture for campus and data centre fabrics

By unifying the various architectures, Juniper Networks says it is providing the ‘building blocks’ for an enterprise-wide fabric, which is key in the development of a secure and automated multi-cloud.

Commenting on the news at the time, Tam Dell’Oro, founder of Dell’Oro Group, said: “enterprise campus networks are embarking on the largest upgrade cycle in about 20 years. We estimate over 1 billion Ethernet switch ports will be refreshed in the coming years, which places Juniper’s launch timing on its EX4600 and multi-cloud capability early in this massive upgrade cycle.”
