The board of directors promoted Kuo, who was previously CFO and senior executive VP, as Chunghwa's former president Chi-Mau Sheih will become chairman and CEO.
Kuo, who has been at Chunghwa since 2001, will remain CFO until the position is filled.
Chunghwa stated: “In the backdrop of decreasing operating profits, global telecom companies are actively seeking additional growth momentum through business partnerships, M&A, and other investments.
“The company remains confident that under the leadership of Sheih and Kuo, Chunghwa Telecom will continue to excel in the coming wave of 5G competition and further solidify its leading position in the domestic telecom industry.”
Another appointment is due to take place as the company’s current internal auditing officer, Fu-Kuei Chung, retires on June 30, 2019.
His position will be filled by Min-Gume Cheng, who has been at Chunghwa since 1982 and is the current VP of its Data Communication business group.
Cheng has also served as VP of the human resources department, VP of the Mobile Communication business group, and Vice President of the Data Communication business group.
Chunghwa added that Cheng is “well suited” for supervising the execution of the auditing process and will “create value” for both the company and shareholders.
“Sheih and Kuo both have long tenures at Chunghwa Telecom and are internally promoted professional managers,” it stated.
“Their extensive knowledge in telecom business and technologies, and in accounting and corporate finance, complement each other well and will provide a smooth management transition.”
