In a blog post, entitled ‘Internet for all, breaking the digital divide in rural areas’ the company said, “Movistar plans to reach 100% of Spanish citizens in 2024.”
The blog, which details Telefónica’s plans to eliminate the so-called ‘digital divide’ in Spain, claims that towns and villages with less than 5,000 inhabitants are still generally reliant on Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) or satellite connectivity.
The blog goes on to say that the “gradual expansion of fibre will kill copper progressively” and that until then 5G is on its way. Once here, it is set to “extend the benefits of internet in the rural world with brutal speeds, imperceptible latencies and the great revolution that the Internet of things (IoT) will suppose, since we will be able to connect many more devices”.
Back in May, Telefónica announced a multi-year extension and expansion of their strategic partnership with Amdocs. Thanks to the expanded agreement, the partnership will help advance Telefónica’s digital transformation initiatives in Argentina and Chile with an expanded portfolio of support services aimed at accelerating Telefónica’s digitalisation and modernisation journey.
“We are pleased to extend our strategic partnership with Amdocs as Telefónica focuses on its ultimate goal of providing excellence in customer satisfaction with a highly secure and unified customer experience,” said Enrique Blanco, global CTIO of Telefónica. “This partnership supports our digital transformation and our focus on automating operations while allowing us to advance in the development of new capabilities by leveraging the use of APIs to speed delivery of innovative and relevant new offerings to our customers.”
