América Móvil and Telxius have announced the deployment of a new high-capacity subsea cable in the Pacific coast of Latin America.

This is part of the ongoing commitment of the two largest telecommunication groups in Latin America to improve global communications.

“América Móvil investment in this new ultra high capacity submarine cable confirms our commitment to provide the best service to customers, with the latest technology,” said Oscar Von Hauske, COO, América Móvil. “The alliance with Telxius is a valuable partnership with one of the most important stakeholders in this arena.”

This will be the first subsea cable since 2001 to connect Puerto San José in Guatemala with Valparaíso, Chile. The system will also have additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurín (Peru) and Arica (Chile).

The cable will have an initial estimated capacity of 108Tbps offering the lowest latency between Guatemala and Chile. As a result, the 7,300km system will serve the entire Pacific coast of South America with the highest levels of service, reliability and security.

“At Telxius we are convinced of the merits of sharing infrastructure and we are pleased to join forces with America Móvil on this new project,” added Guillermo Ansaldo, chief global resources officer, Telefonica. Not only will it allow us to deliver the latest technology and best latency to serve our partners and customers in key markets in Latin America but we will also benefit from significant efficiencies working together with América Móvil in the deployment of this new cable.”

Additionally, the cable has been designed to achieve significant efficiencies due to infrastructure sharing and the five landing stations are already in place and undersea prospection works are currently underway.
