Brazil plans to auction spectrum in the 700MHz, 2.3GHz, 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands in the first quarter of 2020, the regulator told Brazil’s parliament earlier this year.
This could be the biggest 5G auction ever, Nokia executive Wilson Cardoso (pictured) has told the Reuters news agency.
Cardoso, CTO of Nokia’s operations in Latin America, said in an interview: “We see the political will to carry out a large spectrum auction in the first quarter of 2020. I think it is plausible to say that the big Christmas present in Brazil next year will likely be a 5G smartphone.”
The regulator, Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, (Anatel, National Telecommunications Agency), is holding a public consultation before the auction, deputy superintendent of planning and regulation Felipe Roberto de Lima told the Chamber of Deputies in May.
Cardoso told Reuters this week about the auction: “The crown jewels are certainly 26GHz and 700MHz, but the more spectrum available the lower the price speculation among the carriers.
Nokia is already working with TIM’s operations in Brazil on 5G roll-out, he added. Last week TIM Brazil said it is expanding its edge cloud network using Nokia AirFrame servers.
