The company, run by former insurance executive Willem Roos, who is CEO, has started in the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane, the area that includes Pretoria; but it says services will be extended to “Cape Town, Durban and other major metros” in 2019 and 2020.
CMO Khaya Dlanga told local media that the company has achieved speeds of 700Mbps during testing, but the typical client will see speeds around 200Mbps. Rain is advertising “up to 700Mbps” on its website. He has published on Twitter a picture of a speed test at a new customer – showing 457Mbps. Another new user is reporting 473Mbps.
Rain, formerly Wireless Business Solutions, is already running a 4G network, for which it charges 250 rand ($17) a month for unlimited access during 19 hours of the day and 50 rand ($3.36) per gigabyte during the five peak hours.
The company includes a Huawei home router (pictured) for its 5G service.
