Nokia to acquire Elenion
Nokia has confirmed plans to acquire Elenion Technologies, a US-based company delivering silicon photonics technology.
“Its solutions can be readily integrated into Nokia’s product offerings and address multiple high growth segments including 5G, cloud and data centre networking,” said Sam Bucci, head of optical networking at Nokia. “When combined with Nokia, Elenion technologies will accelerate the growth and scale of Nokia’s optical networking business, while enabling us to cost-effectively address new markets.”
The transaction is expected to close in Q1 2020, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Mobile operators compete to provide 5G in Luxembourg
According to Luxembourg Times, operators in Luxembourg are jostling to provide the country’s 5G network ahead of a deadline set by the government.
Once the deadline in March has passed, government will outline its plans for awarding the frequencies required for 5G.
"The number of responding stakeholders has been very high," a spokesperson for the ministry of media and communications said.
Some of the companies include Proximus Luxembourg, better known as Tango, Orange Luxembourg and POST.
CenturyLink and AT&T top US Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard
CenturyLink and AT&T topped Vertical Systems Group’s 2019 US Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard.
According to the annual listing the 2019 market leading companies were: CenturyLink, AT&T, Spectrum Enterprise, Verizon, Comcast, Windstream and Cox.
In addition, six companies attained a 2019 Challenge Tier citation (in alphabetical order): Altice USA, Cogent, Frontier, GTT, Sprint and Zayo.
“The base of US Ethernet ports increased by 8.9 percent in 2019, buoyed by healthy demand for higher speed access to cloud, Internet and VPN services," said Rick Malone, principal of Vertical Systems Group. "During the past year, Ethernet providers focused on better monetizing service features to expand their existing business, while introducing streamlined offers to target the needs of the SMB market."
Southern Cross reaches 800G with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5
Southern Cross Cable has connected the first single wavelength 800G across a live production network using Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optics.
The new 800G channel speed ran error-free on Southern Cross’ live production network between two large, global data centres on the US West Coast and demonstrated record-breaking spectral efficiencies.

The chairman of Cellcom Israel resigns
Cellcom Israel Ltd has announced that Ami Erel, the company's chairman of the board of directors, informed the company of his resignation from the board of directors, effective March 1, 2020.
Erel has served as Cellcom’s chairman since 2005. Prior to this he also served as president and chief executive officer of Discount Investment Corporation from 2001 to 2013.
From March to December 2007, he also held the position of chief executive officer of Netvision, where he served from 2008 to 2011, as chairman of the board of directors. From 1997 to 1999, he worked as president and chief Executive officer of Bezeq, the Israeli Telecommunications Corporation.
