The company said yesterday that it will begin offering its mobile virtual network (MVN) under the existing brand Izzi, using wholesale capacity on Red Compartida – which means shared network.
The company has launched the service three months early, CEO Salvi Folch (pictured) said in an interview with Mexican media.
“The pandemic made us speed up the plans,” he said, adding that Coronavirus means people “are going to have to spend less on some services”. He said: “We see it as an opportunity.”
At first the service will be targeted at Televisa’s existing customers.
Red Compartida is a government-sponsored project to build a wholesale competitor to Telmex, owned by Carlos Slim’s América Móvil. Altán Redes runs the 4G-only network, which has no direct customers.
Televisa will charge 250 pesos (US$11.35) a month, with unlimited data, about one fifth the price of comparable América Móvil packages. The company will target 3 million homes in 17 Mexican cities.
Folch said Televisa may consider expanding the service beyond its own cable clients in the future.
