Shenzhen has set a number of new records after achieving its target of blanket 5G coverage before the end of August 2020.

Shenzhen is the first Chinese city to be covered by 5G, after exceeding its self-imposed target to deploy 45,000 base stations before the end of this month. Currently the city has more than 46,000 5G base stations.

Shenzhen mayor Chen Rugui, confirmed the new in a press conference saying that Shenzhen had become the first city in China to achieve full-scale 5G deployment, and that the feat means it is now home to the world’s biggest 5G network.

Rugui added that the next phase in the city’s 5G strategy was the introduction and development of 5G industries.

Huawei and Tencent are both based in Shenzhen’s Guangdong Province and will no doubt unveil innovations over the coming months in support of this.

According to reports in the South China Morning Post over recent days, the news pushed stocks in Xiaomi, ZTE and China Tower to new highs.

Xiaomi saw its stock increase 5.6%, while ZTE added 4% to its share price. Shares in China Tower have been on a downward trend since April, but recovered in recent days.

In its most recent financial results, China Tower reported a year-on-year increase in net profit of 16.9% and an operating revenue increase of 4.8%.

Shenzhen’s 5G build out started in 2018, with plans for the August 2020 launch confirmed as recently as June.
