International service provider Sparkle has been awarded a fifth certification for greening its operations in Greece.

Since May 2020, 100% of the electricity used by Sparkle Greece at its three data centres - and by all its colocation customers - was obtained from renewable sources with zero carbon emissions. As a result, local electricity supplier Hellenic Petroleum and Edison (ELPEDISON) has issued Sparkle with a Certificate of Origin.

This follows the ISO 14001:2015 attained in 2018, and the former ISO 9001:2015, 27001:2013 and PCI-DSS.

In a statement, Sparkle said it had invested in environmental sustainability across all data centre facilities over the last two years, including two facilities in Italy and one in Turkey. In Greece, where it holds a 40% share of the cloud and data center market, it is currently finalising construction on the “most advanced green data center in Europe”.

Sparkle's fourth data centre in the country, Metamorfosis II, is scheduled for phase one opening in early 2021 and located in Attica.

Once complete it will offer 6,000 m2 of colocation space and has been awarded the DD TIER III Uptime Institute Certification. Its environmental credentials are in the process of being certified by LEED and will include the latest energy-efficient lighting, power and cooling systems available in Greece and the Balkan area, reducing the overall carbon footprint by around 28,000 tons per year.

All Sparkle’s data centres are connected to Nibble, the software defined backbone operated by Sparkle in the Mediterranean.
