Business Insider reported that ByteDance was behind three data centre transactions in northern Virginia in the first half of 2020, citing a person with knowledge of the transactions.
The company’s new 53MW of data centre capacity could accommodate hundreds of thousands of servers for cloud computing and data processing, according to several reports.
CBRE’s latest North American data centre trends report revealed that Northern Virginia experienced the most data centre leasing activity in North America in the first half of 2020.
The state of Virginia also accounted for 93MW of wholesale take-up, close to 70% of the total across primary markets.
The report also found that despite the market’s 284MW increase in capacity year-on-year, Northern Virginia still found itself with a vacancy rate just short of 8%.
Northern Virginia accounted for 69% of the 134.9 MW of total absorption among primary markets in the first half of 2020.
Apart from the US, ByteDance said in 2019 that it plans to open a data centre in India. Even more recently, the company unveiled its plans to build a $500 million (€420m) data centre in Ireland to store its European users' data.
The news came as a response to privacy concerns and an escalating trade war between the US and China.
Founded in 2012, the technology company is reportedly worth over $100 billion as of May 2020.
Elsewhere, ByteDance has rolled out a standalone brand, called Xiaohe Yiliao, to cover some of its healthcare businesses, 36Kr reported on at the start of the week.
The company just launched the brand Dali Education to boost its online education business in an industry, which also picked up motion during the COVID-19 pandemic.
