The outage affected the services of all domestic telecom operators and impacted both domestic and international services, going down at approximately 8:30am HKT, 1 February. Its services were officially back at around 1:20pm HKT that day.
The company said it is “monitoring the stability and quality of the network while keeping the customers informed and ensuring business continuity for international customers”.
The news follows a national military coup that saw the arrest of Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi along with other political leaders. The arrests were made in response to alleged “election fraud” and as a result, a state of emergency has come into force for the next year.
At the point of the uprising, the country’s phone and internet connectivity began to drop, with some claiming to prevent coverage of what was happening.
HGC isn’t the only telco to have resumed services, according to Reuters, Telenor’s network in Myanmar is back up and running.
“The network is up and running .... and we are serving our customers, we think this is very important also in this critical time,” said Sigve Brekke, CEO of Telenor, during a presentation call.
