The Communications Authority (CA) said that Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya failed to achieve adequate performance indicators, though Safaricom — ultimately part of the Vodafone group — did well in the assessment.
The CA said that Safaricom achieved an overall performance of 92% and was named the best of the three. Telkom scored 73% and Airtel just 52%. Airtel customers in nine regions experienced the highest outages and disruptions, so the CA gave the company a score of 20%.
A few days ago Airtel Africa said it would not bid for one of the upcoming licences in neighbouring Ethiopia, because CEO Raghunath Mandava said the company’s “our entire current focus” was on the 14 countries it already serves.
And last month Telkom Kenya’s plans to improve rural coverage were set back when Loon, owned by Google owner Alphabet, said it would end its trial of 4G services from balloons floating above the Kenyan countryside.
