Telefónica is to launch a managed cloud-based internet of things (IoT) service for its customers, using its own cellular connectivity.

The company will launch a pre-commercial version of the service in association with Mavenir and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Telefónica customers will be offered a local shortcut to the internet from the nearest AWS region.

The system will use Telefónica’s Kite platform, said Carlos Carazo, CTO of Telefónica Tech’s IoT and big data operations.

“Kite is much more than an IoT connectivity management platform and improves the whole IoT ecosystem dimensions, from the device to the cloud,” he said. “Cloud-native point of presences will give a complete response to IoT customers with large bases of globally deployed devices.”

Telefónica said it will run Mavenir’s cloud native functions on AWS, giving it the agility to introduce new features and “provide its customers with a consistent experience anywhere in the world”.

The three companies involved said the use of the cloud enables new functionalities not previously possible, including local data processing and storage, direct connectivity to other cloud services, and global low latency.

Ashok Khuntia (pictured), executive VP and GM of packet computing at Mavenir, said the system will use Mavenir’s converged packet core. “Built on web-scale technology and cloud native principles [this] provides support for 4G functionalities and facilitates easy deployment on AWS, offering a compact and efficient model in terms of cost and resources,” he said.

The pre-commercial activities cover the deployment of the Mavenir packet core on AWS, integration with Telefónica Tech’s Kite platform and automation of the end-to-end service. The three companies did not give a target date for a full commercial service.
