Swantee, who was elected to the board in 2016, holds 1,300 shares in Telia Company and will continue to serve as a board member until the end of his term.
In a press statement, Telia Company said: "The Nomination Committee has been informed by Mr Olaf Swantee that he is not available for re-election to the Telia Company Board, but that he will continue to serve as a board member until the end of his term."
A replacement will be proposed by the AGM, scheduled for 12 April.
Meanwhile Swantee has been appointed as a non-executive director on Vodafone's board, effective after its AGM on 27 July, and subject to shareholder approval.
Jean-Francois van Boxmeer, chairman of Vodafone, said: “I am delighted that Olaf will be joining Vodafone’s Board, subject to shareholder approval at this year’s Annual General Meeting. He brings a wealth of communications expertise, has a strong track record of value creation and has presided over a number of Europe’s leading telecoms businesses.
"He is also passionate about technology and its potential to change society for the better. I look forward to Olaf’s contribution to our Board and him playing a significant role in the next stage of Vodafone’s strategic development,” van Boxmeer continued.
Swantee added: “It is an honour to be invited to join the board of Vodafone, Europe and Africa’s leading telecommunications company. I am greatly looking forward to working with Jean-Francois and the board to support Nick and the executive team successfully drive forward the strategy.”
The former CEO of Orange, UK's mobile telecoms business EE and then Sunrise, last year Swantee joined the London-based Community Fibre to lead a £400 million FTTH project. He shared details on this project with Capacity's Alan Burkitt-Gray last year.
Prior to joining EE, he held a number of executive board roles for Orange Group, as well as senior leadership roles within Hewlett Packard, Compaq and Digital Equipment Corporation, across Europe and the United States.
Adding another string to his bow, Mobile Zone, a company listed on the Swiss stock exchange, has announced Swantee will be proposed to be appointed as its chairman at its AGM in April.
