The plans were revealed in an earnings call this week, by CFO Carlos Garcia Moreno, who said: "We are in the process of reviewing the rules for those frequencies ... What Daniel [Hajj, CEO] is telling me is that from October 2021, there are going to be options on 5G in Mexico."
In its financial results, America Movil's profits were 80% higher than a year ago, however, Q4 revenues were down 3.1% in local currency year on year, with equipment revenues falling 9.4%.
Service revenues were almost flat from a year before, but did increase 2.2% year-on-year at constant exchange rates driven by postpaid revenues, up 6.3% and fixed-broadband revenues that rose 8.4%.
In Q4, America Movil added 6.8 million wireless customers and 208,000 new broadband clients.
Shares rose more than 3% early on Wednesday after the announcement.
Mexico's 5G auction is expected this year.
In January, the regulator IFT launched a tender, IFT-10, to award 41 national and regional blocks of spectrum in the 800MHz, PCS (1.9GHz), 2.5GHz and AWS-3 bands, mostly for 4G.
From February 15 to June 11 interested participants can send questions to IFT and register for the tender. Qualified participants will be able to submit offers starting in late September.
IFT spectrum head Alejandro Navarrete said in January that the process could be concluded, with all spectrum licenses awarded, by the end of 2021 or in early 2022.
