Hennessy (pictured) has served as CTO for Three Ireland since 2008 and will now hold a dual role in the technology and operations functions across both businesses, primarily responsible for the network and IT systems.
“I am delighted that David is taking on the CTO role across both our UK and Irish businesses,” said Robert Finnegan, chief executive officer of Three UK and Three Ireland.
“David’s depth of experience will be invaluable to improving the network experience to bring better connectivity, every day, for every customer.”
In the UK, Hennessy will oversee the company’s £2 billion+ investment in building its 5G network, leveraging its existing 5G spectrum portfolio and recently acquired lower frequency spectrum.
Over at Three Ireland, Hennessy will continue his work in driving growth and strength of the network. He recently oversaw an investment of over €700 million in network & IT infrastructure in including its recent deployment of 5G.
Hennessy enters the role with more than 20 years’ telecoms experience and takes over from Susan Buttsworth, chief operating officer at Three UK, who will be leaving the company in June 2021.
Buttsworth has worked for CK Hutchison for 25 years in a number of roles across the Group and joined Three UK as COO in October 2019.
During her tenure, she oversaw the partnership with Ericsson to deliver the company’s highspeed 5G network, completion of its data centre transformation, reaching 1250 5G sites and leading significant enhancements to the 4G network. The role of COO will not be replaced at Three UK.
“I am delighted to be expanding my responsibility to include Three UK’s network and IT transformation,” added Hennessy.
“I look forward to building on the strong foundations Susan has created and delivering a great experience for our customers.”
