Amazon Web Services has announced the general availability of AWS Local Zones in Dallas and Philadelphia to serve the growing edge connectivity market.

AWS Local Zones are a type of AWS infrastructure deployment that places AWS compute, storage, database and other services closer to large populations, industries and IT centres - where no larger AWS Region infrastructure currently exists.

“Customers can now use these new AWS Local Zones to deliver applications that require single-digit millisecond latency to end-users or on-premise installations in the Dallas and Philadelphia metro areas,” said the company.

AWS has not said which data centres are being used to deliver the edge services.

The Local Zones, said AWS, can be used to run applications such as real-time gaming, hybrid migrations, media and entertainment content creation, live video streaming, engineering simulations, AR/VR and machine learning at the edge.

Other AWS Local Zones are available in Boston, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami. An additional ten Local Zones will be launching later 2021, said AWS, in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, New York, Phoenix, Portland and Seattle.

The first AWS Local Zone was launched in Los Angeles in 2019.
