Mantra Data Centers is investing $1 billion to develop data centres in different Indian regions.

The company has signed MoUs with the Indian state governments of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for the development of facilities. They will be located in the established data hubs of Mumbai, NCR (Delhi), Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

The independent data centre platform and wholesale colocation provider said all the facilities will have an initial IT load of 20MW.

“MDC is very well positioned for success in this growing market, with a strong management team, green sourced energy, first-in-class stakeholders, on-time delivery and the right locations to create a network of Tier III and IV data centres across India,” said Jaan Chainani, co-founder and managing director of Mantra Data Centers.

“Our aim is to help our customers grow seamlessly in the midst of the rapid digitalisation of India,” said Chainani.

India's Data Residency Bill is expected to impact e-commerce, social media and BFSI companies as data will need to be stored locally, driving further data centre investments into India. Mantra Data Centers is focused on the Indian market.

Last month, Yondr Group formed a $1 billion joint venture with Everstone Group to open hyperscale data centres in India. Operating under the brand name EverYondr, the first data centre to be opened by the pair will be located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, for which land and power have already been acquired.

That facility will deliver 30MW of IT capacity by 2023, and a total of 60MW when it is fully developed. Other regions targeted for new facilities by the partners include Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi.
