The M3 data centre site will also be bigger than previously planned as the firm has acquired an additional 430,000 sq ft of adjoining land.
“Subject to planning consent for the newly acquired land, our up-sized M3 data centre will be developed into a technology campus,” said NEXTDC.
Located in West Footscray, around 10km west of Melbourne’s CBD, M3 is located close to a major electricity substation as well as telecoms, utilities and public infrastructure. The full M3 site spans a massive 1.076 million sq ft and will target 150MW of critical capacity at full fit-out, said the company.
M3 will provide data centre services to hyperscale cloud providers in a new “availability zone” within the Melbourne market.
To compliment this development, the M2 facility is continuing to undergo further expansion works. M3 will directly interconnect to M1 and M2, “ensuring Victorian organisations are best positioned to leverage the full benefit of accessing our network” and “cloud-dense digital services ecosystem”, NEXTDC said.
“West Footscray is an emerging digital hub as we expand our offering and support our customers with dual availability zone solutions across M1, M2 and this new M3 technology campus,” said NEXTDC CEO Craig Scroggie.
Ground works and base building construction at M3 are “progressing, with practical completion planned for 1HFY23”, the firm said.
Last month, NEXTDC announced plans to build a fourth data centre in the Sydney area (pictured) that would aim to offer 300MW of power when fully built.
