The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is boosting efforts to improve energy efficiency among the country’s data centres via its Energy Star programme.

This includes unveiling an updated specification for the certification of data storage products and a new web-based go-to location for resources on data centre energy efficiency.

“The data centre computing sector is growing rapidly,” said Joseph Goffman, principal deputy assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. “The Energy Star updates will lead the industry towards greater innovation and deep carbon savings.”

The EPA says Energy Star has already played a significant part in keeping energy use down, but that efficiency needs to grow even further as computing data requirements continue to rise.

This autumn, the EPA also plans to partner on a survey of energy and water use with data centre industry association The Green Grid to help provide data centre owners and operators with an up-to-date picture of their performance.

More than 190 data centres covering almost 30 million square feet of floor space have gained EPA’s Energy Star certification, with the Energy Star score for data centres first launched in 2010.
