Telkomsel – itself a 65/35 JV between Telkom Indonesia and Singaporean telecoms company Singtel – on 2 September 2021 signed a sale and purchase agreement with Mitratel.
Telkomsel has also signed a 10-year lease arrangement with Mitratel for tower space rental.
The transaction is part of Telkomsel's strategy to maximize its infrastructure and accelerate its strategy as a customer-centric service provider in the digital ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Mitratel will strengthen its telecommunication towers portfolio and become the leading independent tower player in Indonesia. It now owns and operates some 28,000 cell towers across Indonesia.
Mitratel in October 2019 acquired 2,100 telecommunication towers from Indosat Ooredoo through a competitive tender process selling off 3,100 towers for the value of Rp6.39 trillion. Profesional Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Protelindo) was the successful bidder for the remaining 1,000 towers.
In March 2019, Mitratel acquired 100% shares in Persada Sokka Tama, which owns 1,017 telecommunication towers.
Telkomsel in October 2020 completed a portfolio restructuring by selling 6,050 cell towers to Mitratel for Rp10.3 trillion
