Globenet confirms the start of construction of a new edge data centre in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The new facility is being developed to expand its current infrastructure and meet increased demand for colocation and connectivity services.

“We decided to build our second edge data centre in Barranquilla because it is a strategic interconnection point in South America for local and international Carriers, ISPs, OTTs and CDNs," said Eduardo Falzoni, CEO of Globenet.

"In fact, Globenet’s own network provides direct, low-latency submarine routes to Brazil and the United States from Barranquilla, as well as a direct route to Bogota through our redundant terrestrial backhaul.”

This new edge data centre, integrated with Globenet’s ecosystem of content providers, service providers and IXs, as well as Globenet’s low latency subsea network and redundant terrestrial backhauls, will deliver much more efficient access to content with optimal performance.

Due to become ready for service in Q3 2022, the new site is set to quadruple the number of racks and power currently available in Globenet’s existing data centre in Barranquilla, enabling custom, flexible solutions in a neutral environment for local and international carriers, OTTs, ISPs and CDNs.

“After a successful experience with our first data centre in Barranquilla, this new edge data centre will enable growth at a larger scale for Colombia’s digital economy, reinforcing our commitment to provide the most advanced connectivity and data centre solutions for people and businesses in the region,” added Fabio Laguado, CCO of Globenet.

The news come comes two weeks after GlobeNet announced the construction of another new edge data centre in Fortaleza, Brazil, due to go live by Q3 2022. This brings GlobeNet's expected total of edge data centre locations in Latin America to five by the end of 2022.

In related news, June saw the launch of GlobeNet’s new subsea cable system Malbec, connecting Argentina and Brazil.
