Located in Ashburn, Loudoun County, Northern Virginia, IAD3 (pictured) is due to come into service in Q1 2023, with an initial capacity of 4MW and the potential to scale to 40MW. It is intended to complement neighbouring DataBank facilities, which include the Ashburn and McClean data centres which offer a total of 22.5 MW of power across 111,000 sq. ft. of raised floor data center space.
DataBank is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at the IAD3 site on 1 December, which will be attended by Buddy Rizer, executive director of the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development.
"DataBank is investing extensively across our portfolio nationwide, and IAD3 represents a tremendous opportunity for our clients to take advantage of Ashburn's location and proximity to 70% of the world's Internet traffic," said Raul Martynek, CEO of DataBank.
"This Ashburn data centre more than doubles our colocation footprint in Loudoun County, providing a high-quality colocation solution for cloud, content, technology and Fortune 500 customers," Martynek added.
The goundbreaking rounds off a busy year for DataBank after it acquired zColo and invested in EdgePresence. The firm also acquired a 34-acre plot in Orangeburg, New York, where it plans to build a new campus, with five, 6MW data halls and started the expansion of KC3 in Kansas.
The new Virginia facility will incorporate "the latest modular design and energy-efficient technologies available today" with DataBank saying this demonstrates its "commitment to building environmentally sustainable data centre solutions".
