The deal will mean AsiaSat’s existing satellite and ground infrastructure will enable Turbidite’s dynamic edge data centre platform to support an accelerated demand for digital services.
Barney (pictured), co-founder and CEO of Turbidite, said: “Together with AsiaSat, we are able to further empower these customers to transform into digital ready organisations with secure access, flexible transport/bandwidth options and real time deployment.”
Barney was chairman and CEO of Global Cloud Xchange (GCX) until early 2020, when the financially troubled company was taken over by its lenders.
AsiaSat, based in the Hong Kong special administrative region (SAR) of China, is owned by a joint venture of China’s state-owned telecoms business, CITIC, and US-based private equity investor Carlyle.
AsiaSat CEO Roger Tong said: “We see this partnership as one of our strategic moves to support customers with a breadth of new services to cope with the rapid pace of digital transformation.”
Barney said the partnership with AsiaSat will help Turbidite “broaden our edge data centre solutions to support new mandates by the growing number of OTTs [over-the-top companies] and media companies as they continue to drive up digital traffic”.
Tong said: “Turbidite’s extensive expertise in the data centre and network infrastructure deployment and management will truly complement our current satellite and ground-based solution portfolios.”
The companies will use AsiaSat’s Tai Po earth station in the Hong Kong New Territories. They said “the partnership will bring together the expertise and skills of the two companies to provide hosting services alongside satellite and ground-based connectivity”.
