DNB is offering wholesale 5G services to all MNOs in the country for a commercial trial from December 15 to March 31, 2022, at no extra cost according to the firms’ CCO Ahmad Taufek Omar.
The offer is applicable for all live 5G sites throughout parts of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.
“We call it a commercial trial. When we started something new, we are talking about serving five to six big brothers, they need to experience it first,” Omar said.
A report from Singaporean outlet The Straits Times said that TM had made the decision despite pushback from some of its competitors who are not willing to follow the plan set out by state-controlled DNB.
A DNB statement retorted that claim though, releasing a statement that read: “The others are still considering. But the trials will commence by the end of December and people will be able to enjoy 5G for free so long as their telco provides it.”
The report added that TM’s competitors could be swayed into taking the deal but would prefer to have and control their own 5G networks.
The Malaysian government has been unimpressed with the slow speed of the 5G rollout in the country but it is aiming for 80% nationwide coverage by 2024.
